Machine Guarding Assessments

  • Employee exposure to unguarded or inadequately guarded machines is prevalent in many workplaces, especially in the manufacturing sector. Consequently, workers who operate and maintain machinery suffer amputations and permanent disabilities, lacerations, crushing injuries, abrasions, and death.

    SSM’s Machine Safeguarding Assessments follow the CSA Z432 Safeguarding of Machinery standard and focus on recognizing and controlling common hazards associated with the operation and use of certain types of machines most frequently involved in injuries.

    SSM provides a full written report to the client outlining recommendations on control and elimination of machinery risk. The recommendations help companies to be compliant with the Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Regulations including the Advantages and Limitations of Machine Guards and the Advantages and Limitations of Safeguarding Devices.

    Safeguarding devices must:

    • Be designed and constructed with the goal of preventing any part of the body from reaching the danger point or area;
    • Take into account the physical characteristics of the people involved and in particular their ability to reach through openings or around barriers and guards; and
    • Meet CSA Z432 standard criteria.
